It's finally here: Porsche puts wireless EV charging into production

Porsche has begun offering inductive wireless charging as an option for the Cayenne Electric, letting drivers charge by parking the SUV over a ground-mounted base plate rather than plugging in. The system uses a charging pad embedded in the vehicle floor paired with a weatherproof pad installed in the parking space; power transfers across a magnetic field to start charging automatically. Porsche positions the feature as a convenience for everyday use and overnight top-ups, eliminating cable handling while keeping the process largely hands-off.

The charging setup delivers up to 11 kW with roughly 90% efficiency and includes built-in safety measures: motion sensors and foreign-object detection halt charging if a living creature approaches the vehicle or if a metallic object on the pad heats up. The ground pad is rated for outdoor installation, and Porsche is rolling the option out in stages, with orders open now in Germany and select European markets. The rollout targets practical usability and safety rather than high-speed charging, fitting overnight home or private parking scenarios rather than public fast-charge applications.
