Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train)

Waymo is launching a transit rewards program in the San Francisco Bay Area (announced September 22, 2026) that pays riders Waymo Cash when they connect Waymo trips with public transit using a linked Visa tap-to-pay card. Initially available to employees and rolling out to the public in the coming weeks, the program automatically issues $2.85 in Waymo Cash - the cost of a San Francisco bus fare - when a Waymo trip and a contactless Visa transit payment occur within two hours. The incentive applies across 27 Bay Area transit agencies that accept contactless Visa payments and is designed to work with recent regional tap-to-pay and transfer discount initiatives; Waymo cites that over half of riders in its most mature markets already use public transit.

Operational and partnership specifics aim to make multimodal trips more seamless: Waymo will lease 40 Caltrain station parking spaces to stage vehicles for transfers and plans to replicate that model with other agencies. The program builds on prior transit-credit pilots in San Francisco and Los Angeles, integration with LA Metro’s Mobility Wallet, and a microtransit partnership with Via in Chandler, AZ. State and local officials framed the program as strengthening rather than replacing public transit, and Waymo positions the initiative as a step toward expanded, shared, all-electric mobility and broader city rollouts.
