Major messaging shifts in 2025-26 - an October 2025 breach of a Discord support vendor that exposed roughly 70,000 government ID photos, expanding UK and Australian age‑verification rules, planned global age checks using an AI age‑estimator, a 2026 IPO filing, and a gradual roll‑out of ads - have driven scrutiny of Discord’s privacy and moderation model. Discord added end‑to‑end encryption for voice and video via DAVE but keeps all text on company servers and confirmed no plans to encrypt chat. Users also report abrupt, platform‑wide automated bans with poor appeal routes. The right alternatives are evaluated by whether group chat is E2E encrypted, whether a single company can shut them down, whether they’re open source and self‑hostable, whether signup requires personal data, and whether they run ads.
A head‑to‑head comparison finds varied tradeoffs. Matrix/Element is the most mature federated option with E2E for private rooms but carries metadata, fiddly key management, and moderation limits. Revolt (renamed Stoat), Fluxer, and Nerimity are open‑source Discord‑style clones that ease migration but generally lack E2E and federation, differ on email requirements, and can be fragile under surges. GameVox is proprietary with a self‑host option but still ties to company cloud and lacks text E2E. Armada (built on Nostr by Soapbox) emerges as the standout: AGPL‑licensed, Concord‑based end‑to‑end encryption by default for every community, decentralized relays and self‑hosting, signup without personal info, no ads, and a full feature set (voice, video/screen share, emoji, GIF picker, threads, events, bots).
