A Tesla in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode struck and fatally injured a 71-year-old Vallejo man early Thursday on Interstate 80 westbound at the Interstate 780 interchange in Solano County. The crash happened about 2:30 a.m. as the man entered the freeway from the right shoulder; dash-cam footage provided to California Highway Patrol shows the Tesla traveling about 70 mph, braking and veering left but still hitting the pedestrian with the car’s right front. At least one additional vehicle ran over the man after he was struck. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The 26-year-old San Francisco driver stopped, cooperated and turned over the dash camera, and told CHP the vehicle was operating in FSD autonomous mode at the time, according to a CHP statement. No other drivers stopped, authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and the CHP is investigating the collision while asking witnesses or anyone with information about other vehicles involved to contact the Solano Area office.
