OpenPrinter: Open Source Printer

OpenPrinter is an open-source, repairable inkjet printer built from standard mechanical and electronic parts for makers, artists, and anyone who wants a durable, modifiable device. It accepts HP 63 (US) and HP 302 (Europe) printheads and uses refillable black and color cartridges, producing 600 dpi black and 1200 dpi color output. The design supports standard sheets and paper rolls (North American letter, tabloid, 11-inch roll; European A4, A3, 297 mm roll) and includes an integrated cutter. Key hardware includes a Raspberry Pi Zero W main board, an STM32 cartridge MCU, a 1.47-inch TFT display with jogger wheel, USB-C and USB-A ports, Wi‑Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 24 V DC supply; compatibility is provided via the open-source CUPS print server.

OpenPrinter rejects proprietary drivers and cartridge DRM, prioritizing longevity, repairability, and user control: every mechanical and electronic design file, firmware, and bill of materials will be released under CC BY‑NC‑SA 4.0 so owners can repair, upgrade, and contribute. The project emphasizes modularity and adaptability (wall- or desktop-mountable) and has received positive press coverage and a nomination for a French design award.
