Europe Must Choose Between Power and Dependence

Three co-authors argue that Europe faces a clear choice: remain dependent on others or become a democratically grounded geopolitical power capable of defending its interests and preserving its social and environmental model. They call for turning existing strengths into coherent capabilities - pooled investments and common capacities in defense, energy, research, semiconductors, cloud computing, data, AI and industrial policy - while respecting subsidiarity and national diversity. Practical measures include financing reindustrialization, protecting digital sovereignty and data, harnessing AI for public goods, and coordinating the 2027 national elections that will collectively shape EU strategy. The Europa Power Initiative and a proposed transnational media and debate infrastructure aim to cultivate shared consciousness and prepare joint policy responses, because muddled half-measures and fragmented spending would leave Europe weaker and more dependent.

A second piece insists recent U.S. policy signals the end of automatic American guardianship: Trump’s National Security Strategy, Elon Musk’s attack on the EU, and Russian commentary exemplify a shifting transatlantic posture. That history of “Pax Americana” masked interest-driven selectivity in defending democracy; Europe’s leaders have too often hoped the U.S. will return to its postwar role. Both authors demand radical self-criticism and fast strategic reorientation - building technological sovereignty, stronger public institutions, and collective decision-making so Europe can act independently when great-power rivalries intensify.
