Do birds have accents? the regional differences in birdsong

Birdsong shows both individual variation and clear regional dialects: some individuals sing simpler or more elaborate versions of a species’ motif, while populations produce geographically distinct accents. Examples include woodpigeons sounding different across the UK, and yellowhammers famously varying the final phrase - east England versions reverse pitch relationships compared with south and west. Yellowhammers introduced from Britain to New Zealand in the 1860s-70s preserved around seven dialects, including variants lost in modern Britain, and citizen-science mapping projects track these patterns. Students’ recordings of blue tits illustrate how nearby birds of the same species can still sound noticeably different.

Song learning combines an inherited template with early listening to parents and neighbours: hand-reared chaffinches produce simplified songs, wild birds acquire complexity from tutors, and corn buntings typically adopt the song of their nearest neighbour rather than their parent. Urban environments reshape song structure and timing - birds raise pitch, shorten and speed up phrases, and sing louder to compete with low-frequency noise, and city blackbirds start dawn singing up to five hours earlier than rural counterparts. Artificial lighting advances dawn singing by minutes to an hour in several species. Large gaps remain in knowledge of female song: 3,500 of 4,814 species lack sufficient data on whether females sing.
