An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord

This explains a new, privacy-focused system for assigning age groups on Discord to meet expanding legal requirements (recent rollouts include Texas and Brazil) while minimizing friction. Accounts will be automatically placed into adult (18+), teen (13-17), or unconfirmed buckets using non-content signals such as account age, activity patterns, and the servers and communities connected to the account; messages, calls, and other content are not examined. More than 90% of accounts are expected to be classified automatically; adults experience no change, teens retain core functionality but gain additional protections that block age-restricted content and spaces, and unconfirmed accounts have limited access until age is verified. Users can view and manage their status at User Settings > Account Status and can manually confirm if misclassified.

A variety of age-verification options have been added to reduce reliance on biometric ID and to increase choice: credit card checks routed through Stripe via a vendor (k‑ID), Apple and Google Play age-range attestations, Google Wallet ID passes (limited countries), and reusable AgeKey credentials; facial age estimation is required to run fully on-device. Third-party vendors are contractually required to retain only minimal data for the shortest time and delete it after verification. A technical blog explains the estimation model and Discord began including age-assurance metrics in transparency reporting; rollout is phased over the week.
