28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days

A September 2026 Ghost Jobs analysis of 607,050 job postings on employer career sites finds 28.3% of dated openings have been live more than 90 days and the median open posting is 36 days old. Of the dated sample, 45.1% were under 30 days, 12.0% were 90-180 days, and 16.3% over 180 days; 163,057 postings exceeded 90 days and 94,106 exceeded 180 days. In the last 30 days, 88,895 postings were removed from employer sites; 14.6% of those closed within a week and the median time to removal (over the prior 90-day closures) was 24 days. Reposts are uncommon: 4.2% of closed postings reappeared as new within 30 days.

Staleness varies by sector, applicant tracking system (ATS) and country: hospitality has the largest stale share (43.9%, median 65 days) while healthcare turns over fastest (19.7%, median 29 days). Lever and BambooHR boards show the highest shares over 90 days (48.2% and 47.9%), Workday the lowest (17.2%); some ATS omit posting dates so age cannot be measured. Country-level and employer-level tables highlight extremes (e.g., large employers with many long-open listings and some firms that consistently publish salaries for all openings). The dataset was gathered by reading ATS public APIs, uses employers’ own publish dates where available (95% of postings), and flags a posting “stale” if shown open more than 90 days.
